 Sculpture

Exhaust pipes, radiators, fenders, coil spring, and wire

Created with GMAW

Every phase of this piece was an experience. Collecting the discarded car parts was unlike gathering any other material. The yard had this overwhelming sense of destruction. The cars there were unquestionably totaled, and I regularly found myself wondering how such damage could have occurred or if everyone involved in the accident came out okay.

The variety of materials around us at the yard felt endless. There were parts on the ground, hanging from the side of vehicles and piled along the sides of each row. I had no idea what I was looking for. I had attempted a couple sketches, but it was hard to visualize. Even after collecting all my materials, I did not sketch very much. This was the first sculpture I have ever created without a plan. There was a point during construction where I flipped the original structure on its side which allowed me to build horizontally instead of vertically. This flip drastically changed the shape of the piece and allowed me to create a structure of more volume. It also provided a space where I could highlight the contrast of materials within the same structure.

I created this piece by allowing the materials to build upon themselves. It was a refreshing to experience a process of creating without set steps.
