Artist Statement

Scout graduated the University of Colorado Boulder with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and studio arts in addition to a minor in business. Ever since childhood she has been drawn to the subtle magics found in the everyday and draws inspiration from the inorganic and organic qualities of the materials she uses. Her artwork is an attempt to bring the imagined to life. Her undergraduate career was spent creating sculptures and installations from found materials, such as river rocks, sticks, pinecones and wooden pallets. In addition to industrial materials such as hardware, car parts and found scrap metal. After completing her Bachelors degrees, Scout went on to attend a welding program at Emily Griffith Technical College. Since completing the program she has passed 8 different structural certification tests and is proficient in multiple weld processes such as; GMAW, GTAW, SMAW, FCAW-S, FCAW-G, oxyfuel welding/cutting, and brazing with all different kinds of alloys like carbon, corten, aluminum, stainless steel, brass and bronze. She currently works as an artistic metal fabricator for a shop that specializes in large scale public art. But has hopes of being out on her own very soon! Contact for weld projects and commissions.

As we grow older, it becomes easier to ignore subtle oddities around us and fall into the mold of perception that society accepts and dictates. Society has a way of governing how we experience emotions; what’s acceptable to feel and when it is acceptable to express. Often it seems we forget to fully feel and engage throughout our day to day. Instead, we go through the motions rather disengaged with few questions. This disengagement can lead to a loss of connection with ourselves but also our environments and communities.

Many of Scouts pieces are inspired by the feelings and events of her own experience. Her art practice has provided an outlet that continues to help engage with her inner reactions more deeply. Her work confronts societal expectations and norms, more specifically the expected role of the modern woman. The intention of her work is to engage others in a way that encourages them to ask the tough questions like; “Are we what society defines us to be?," "Why is our society like this to begin with?," "Who made it this way?," "Can we change it?,” "Am I the only one who feels this way?"
